As you probably know, college can be a financial burden for some. The medical education that you will receive will pay out as you settle into your career. However, for many students, attending college means applying for financial aid, going into debt and working long hours while studying to pay for higher education.


So let's hear it for medical school scholarships! While these scholarships for medical students may not cover all your tuition, they can definitely provide a boost. Unlike loans, you're awarded medical school scholarships so they never have to be paid back. These scholarships help lessen the financial burden by taking the weight off your shoulders.

How much does medical school cost?


Tuition varies depending on whether you want to attend a public or private institution if it's MD- or DO- granting. Your tuition will also increase during your 3rd & 4th years of medical school because the classes are longer. Medical school tuition averages around $200,000 in the United States. Sounds like a lot? For many, it is. That said, let's explore some medical school scholarships that can help.


Herbert W. Nickens Medical Student Scholarship

If you have shown a contribution to promoting justice during your medical education and healthcare equity in the U.S., you're eligible for this award. You'll have to highlight specific work which promoted social justice and health equity and submit two letters that gives testimonials that support contributions to social justice and health equity. Once you're selected as the winner, you will receive a $10,000 prize and will also present the Nickens Lecture at Learn Serve Lead 2023: The AAMC Annual Meeting in Seattle,WA.


Alliance Medical Education Scholarship(AMES)

Awarded by the Foundation of the Pennsylvania Medical Society. This scholarship is a good option for any Pennsylvania resident attending a medical school in Pennsylvania as a second or third-year student.

Award amount is $2,500


United Health Foundation/NMF Diverse Medical Scholars Program

If you identify as an underrepresented student in a medical school located here in the U.S. and have demonstrated leadership and commitment to underserved communities, this scholarship is for you. The fact that you want to become a doctor to work to help others in underserved communities means that you're the type of person who goes above and beyond and should be awarded for it. This program. is a renewable scholarship that provides a $7,000 award to second-, third- and fourth-year medical students.


Tylenol Future Care Scholarship

This scholarship opportunity is perfect for anyone planning to attend medical school, nursing school and/ or pharmacy degree program full-time. Though there is no minimum GPA to be eligible, a committee will evaluate your application and make a selection based on your college GPA, academic records, and community involvement such as volunteer services. You will also need to express yourself uniquely in an essay to get the committee's attention.

Award amount: $5,000-$10,000


Myrtle Siegfried

This scholarship opportunity is perfect for anyone in Lehigh, Berks, or Northampton County, (Pennsylvania) entering medical school and also anyone enrolled full-time in a fully accredited U.S. medical school. To be eligible, you must provide reference letters and an essay explaining why you want to be doctor and what contributions will you make to the health profession.

Award amount: $2,000
